Begonia ilinensisย is a newly described species ofย Begoniaย sect.ย Baryandra, first found in the coastal areas of Ilin Island, off the southwestern coasts of Mindoro Island in the Philippines. The species resides in exposed to semi-exposed limestone areas on the coast. The species is notable for its dormancy during the dry months, where it is limited to its minute rhizomes. It only starts growing its foliage and flowers during the wet season of June to November. Morphologically, the species is relatively small compared to mostย Baryandraย species in the Philippines, but resemblesย Begonia luzonensis, a resident of nearby Luzon Island, mainly by its leaf margins. However, the species is much smaller compared toย B. luzonensisย specifically in terms of lamina, inflorescences, and capsules, and it lacks the characteristic rusty villous indumentum ofย B. luzonensisย on its leaves, peduncles, and petioles. We also documented and mapped otherย Begoniaย sect.ย Baryandraย that we have found thriving on the same habitat asย B. ilinensisย on other portions of the Philippines to shed further insights on the ecology of these coastal Begonias based on their habitat preferences.
Living in the mountains during the winter many of my Begonias slow to a halt on growth, some go dormant. A few rhizomatous species lose all their leaves, just leaving a barren rhizome, that will return in the spring. While others such as this supposed form of Begonia luzhaiensis absolutely flourish.

Due to heat and some refrigeration issues I have had a lot of trouble making new seeds this year. Now that the weather is better I am currently working on new fresh seeds that will hopefully be available in the next couple months.

Added a few unknown species from India and a new species from Laos. As well as others.

Now includes Begonia Aketajawensis and Begonia Sp. Ngoc Lac

Now includes Begonias sp. Surat Thani and Begonia Sp. Sabah “Mini”

Begonia fulgurata can grow pretty fast once it’s germinated. When it reaches the size of the right image I will extract the seedlings and replant in a bigger container with worm castings as a fertilizer. I also space them out to give plenty of room to mature.
Will update again later.
Happy Growing.
